Volunteer Opportunities - The FAM Volunteer Guild helps broaden the impact of the FAM through support of its programs, events, and outreach services. It achieves this goal by providing assistance in many areas. Volunteers also assist customers in the Museum Store and welcome visitors.

Other volunteers help by publicizing programs, hosting receptions, and decorating the museum at holiday time. Approximately 85 Volunteer Guild members contribute more than 9,000 hours each year to help the museum with these efforts. If you are interested in contributing your time at the FAM, please call the museum at (563) 326-7804 or e-mail us at [email protected].

Docent Program - Docents are volunteer teachers who enrich the lives of museum visitors by introducing them to works of art in the museum. The Docent Program not only educates participants in art history and world cultures, but also cultivates teaching and communication skills. Docents generally attend two or three training sessions a month from August to May. While previous teaching experience and art history knowledge are helpful, anyone may join the docent program. To learn more about this educational program that provides a valuable service to the community, please call the Curator of Education at (563) 326-7887.

Art to Go - Museum docents are available to visit the classroom to present a slide program on a variety of art topics. Art to Go programs may also be scheduled for after school programs in school settings. Programs must be scheduled three weeks in advance. The program fee is $35.00. For a complete listing of Art to Go topics, or to schedule a presentation, please call the Curator of Education at (563) 326-7887.

Speakers Bureau - FAM staff is available to speak to social clubs, professional organizations, corporate groups, school and university classes, libraries and other community groups about the FAM’s exhibitions, collections and the future Figge Art Museum. To schedule a presentation, please call the Development Director at (563) 888-2047.

Teacher Resource Center - This center houses over 400 videos and slide packs about the visual arts, including several items on loan from the National Gallery of art. Borrowing privileges are extended to teachers who are FAM members at the Educator Level ($25 annual dues). Please call the Curator of Education at (563) 326-7887 for a catalog of resource listings.

Children’s Center - The activity stations in this room offer museum visitors the opportunity to do art activities that are inspired by works of art featured in main gallery exhibitions. The Children’s Center is open during regular museum hours. There is no fee for use of this room, but donations are appreciated.

Brand Boeshaar Scholarship Program - The Brand Boeshaar Scholarship Program awards four $3,000 scholarships annually to graduating high school seniors who wish to earn a college degree in fine art, commercial art or art education. Scholarships will be renewed for three subsequent years based on continued scholastic achievement in the student’s designated major. Students who attend public or private schools in the following service areas are eligible: Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency 9 (Iowa), Henry Stark Education Agency (Illinois) and Black Hawk Area Education District (Illinois). Applications are available in September; portfolio materials are submitted in early March.

The Brand Boeshaar Scholarship Program is funded by the Brand Boeshaar Trust and managed by the Figge Art Mueseum’s education department. For more information, or to receive an application, please call the Curator of Education at (563) 326-7887.
