Mercedes Matter Biography
This hardcover monograph published just this year examines the world of New York Abstract Expressionist painter Mercedes Matter. Founder of the New York Studio School, Matter was not only a painter but also an educator and critic. The oversized book is the first comprehensive look at the artist and reveals her vibrant work in lavish detail in over 125 color plates. Matter was also model and muse to her husband, the photographer Herbert Matter, and the volume includes a selection of his photos of her including a gorgeous study used on the cover. Letters to Matter from Hans Hofmann, Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock, and essays detailing the give and take between her and this group of artists which included Willem de Kooning, his wife Elaine de Kooning, Philip Guston and Arshile Gorky are included. 276 pages, 18 x 12 x 1.5 inches. Country Road ABC: An Illustrated Journey Through America’s Farmland is back at the Museum Store. This charming, hardcover 64-page picture book (geared towards children ages 5-8, but appreciated by all ages) retails for $17.

Art Salon @ The Museum Store
The Art Salon is located in the Museum Store, and offers frequently changing exhibitions of new artworks for sale by local and regional artists. Sales from these exhibits benefit both the artists and the museum.
Quad City Art Teachers • August 8–September 25
Artist and art instructor Don Heggen of Long Grove, Iowa, will curate a diverse show drawn from the work of Quad City-based art teachers, showcasing the local flavor and talents of this inventive group. Heggen, who taught art at Davenport West High School for 30 years, now teaches at the Figge and holds classes in Florida during the winter. He often draws inspiration from nature for his signature watercolors—compositions that are rich in color and stylized pattern. Reception will be held 5-8 pm Thursday, September 2.
Images from a Well-Traveled Lens • October 3–November 28
Quad-City photographer and entrepreneur Hunt Harris shares his world view. Stunning digital photographs draw in the viewer and create intimate connections to the work. Capturing the qualities of a particular, specific light and time gives these images the power to transport. A reception will be held October 14, 5-8 pm; enjoy an informal art talk with Harris at 6 pm in the Art Salon.
